Helen Ison – Families’ worker
Worked overseas with her husband Alex and two (now adult) children. On her return, worked as a teacher, completed more Pastoral studies and, more latterly, is employed as the church Families’ Worker. Enjoys music and worship leading, walking, good food and being a grandparent. She also volunteers as a children and families’ chaplain at a local hospital..
Over 30 years in petroleum distribution and still going. Married to Philippa with three older children and lives in SB. Passion for things that keep me young – Youth work, exercise, Leicester City, loud music and the occasional beer. Trying desperately not to grow up too soon.
Brian is the Church Secretary, Youth Leader and a deacon.
Married to Iain, with three adult children and four grandchildren. Recently retired; worked as a social worker with children, most recently in adoption. Loves gardening, reading and people – especially small ones – in equal measure. Came to faith at 18 after being jilted by a boyfriend.
Beth is the church’s ‘Safe Kids Coordinator’ and a deacon.
Married to Beth. Now runs a small engineering company after previously lecturing at Loughborough University. Likes playing his violin, often has his nose in a book, and gardens. Enjoys visiting people and teaching the Bible to children and adults. His Christian faith became real in his teens.
Iain is one of the deacons.
After a wandering childhood (West Indies/Southern Africa/North Wales/France), ended up in SB and has rooted in here over 25 years. Favourite description of her work role: ‘leader of the little green people’ (thanks to a London policeman – far more exciting description than ‘Year 6 teacher’). Loves reading, especially books about the challenge of living out faith in a messy world.
Karen and husband, David, is involved with our ministry to home students, and hosts the student life group in their home on Sunday evenings.
Lived overseas for a good part of his married life. Moved to the area in 2003 (with wife Helen and two children, now grown up) and found a warm welcome at SB Baptist Church. Now works as a project manager overseeing construction projects in the electricity industry. Spare time often devoted to walking, folk music or good restaurants.

Having studied Animal Science on the Sutton Bonington Campus, Sarah decided to stick around after graduating, and works as a Project Manager for a technology company in Nottingham. She enjoys escaping the office, travelling and getting outside – dabbling in triathlon, and going on bike rides (for coffee and cake) with fellow SBBC members. She loves working with the youth, and helping them navigate through teenage life and grow as disciples of Jesus.
Sarah is one of the deacons.
John is a retired teacher. He is married to Val, the International Chaplain at the SB Campus. John assists in running a Globe Café, and a weekly Bible study for international students. As well as this, offering hospitality, helping arrange social events and being the church treasurer keep him busy. In between he enjoys preaching, cycling, walking, cooking and baking, all kinds of practical work, travelling and spending time with the grandchildren.

Prior to taking early retirement, worked in the building materials industry for 40 years. Enjoyed the cross cultural interactions in his job and is now involved with International students in SB and loves the rich diversity of these very gifted young people.
